Surgery Day

Sarah finally had her surgery! She has had a "curly toe" since she was born and lately it has been bothering her since it actually curls underneath the toe next to it. The Orthopedic surgeon said it was just a tight tendon that needed to be released. Sounds simple enough...but they had to put her totally under to do it since the tendon is located between two nerves. We took her in at 7:45 am and they took us right back.

She put on her gown and hat.

Then this nurse came in with a teddy bear and some play doctor tools and let Sarah play doctor on the bear. She also talked to her about what to expect. When the anesthesiologist came in, he picked her up and carried her back to the operating room and we returned to the waiting room. 45 minutes later they called us back to the recovery room and said everything went great. Sarah had a hard time waking up and slept the whole way home.

The doctor had said she would be on pain medication for a few days and would probably not want to walk for a couple of days. Well, three hours after the surgery Sarah was running across the house! I tried to get her to slow down, but there was no stopping her.

He also said to try to keep her bandage intact for a week, until her follow-up appointment. This is what her bandage looked like after 5 hours.

Luckily Aunt Kody came over and laid in bed with her to watch a movie and eat popcorn and that helped keep her still for the first day. I stopped giving her pain medication after the 12 hours, hoping that would slow her down, but to no avail!

Oh she looks so cute in her gown and cap. I'm glad Sara didn't feel the half of what I'm sure you did for a while there.

You're right...it was really hard to let the anesthesiologist carry her out of the room, but luckily it was a very quick surgery! She saw the doctor on Tuesday and he said everything is looking great. She has no bandage now and her toe is relatively straight!

A week to week (or maybe year to year, depending on how much time I have) update on our 3-ring circus.
